Connection Methods

How do I connect via Bluetooth?

Bluetooth allows wireless configuration from your phone or computer:

  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in your device settings
  • Visit app.brickquips.com
  • Click "Connect via Bluetooth" and look for your BRICK QUIPS!™
  • Your device name will be shown as "BrickQuip-XXXX"
  • Pair when prompted and start customizing!
Note, on iOS Web Bluetooth is disabled in Safari. You will need to use the free BRICK QUIPS!™ iOS App:

How do I connect via WiFi (QR code)?

The QR code method connects directly to your BRICK QUIPS!™ via WiFi:

  • When WiFi is enabled, your BRICK QUIPS!™ displays a QR code.
  • Scan the QR code with your phone's camera to access your BRICK QUIPS!™ via web. Note, shaking your device will make the QR code show.
  • Note, this method only works if your device is on the same WiFi as your phone.

Power

How do power management features work?

BRICK QUIPS!™ has three power management modes:

  • Performance: Full brightness, always connected - best for USB power
    • In this mode the device will stay on all day, and leave Bluetooth on for you to connect to it.
    • Bluetooth will be enabled, and WiFi enabled occasionally to do housekeeping.
  • Balanced: Moderate power saving with occasional WiFi sleep - good all-around
    • Same as Performance but screen will be turned off and on to save power.
    • Note, shaking the device will turn the screen back on.
  • Power Saver: Aggressive power saving, WiFi sleeps frequently.
    • Same as Balanced but device will sleep to save even more power.
    • Note, shaking the device will NOT wake the device up.

Settings & Configuration

How do I change rotation speed?

Rotation speed controls how long each quip is displayed:

  • Open the configuration page and tap the settings icon
  • Find the "Rotation Speed" slider
  • Adjust from 5 seconds (fast) to 300 seconds (5 minutes)
  • Changes take effect after you save

How do I adjust brightness?

Display brightness can be adjusted to suit your environment:

  • Open Settings from the configuration page
  • Use the "Display Brightness" slider
  • Range from 0% (very dim) to 100% (maximum brightness)

How do I set wake/sleep times?

Schedule when your BRICK QUIPS!™ is active:

  • Open Settings > Wake and Sleep
  • Enable "Wake/Sleep Schedule"
  • Set your Wake Hour (when the device turns on)
  • Set your Sleep Hour (when the device turns off)
  • The device uses your configured timezone
  • During sleep, the device enters deep sleep mode to save power

What are External Quips?

External Quips let your BRICK QUIPS!™ fetch messages from the internet:

  • Enable in Settings > External Quips
  • Set a URL that returns a list of quips (one per line)
  • The device periodically fetches new quips (configurable interval)
  • Great for displaying dynamic content like quotes, news, or custom feeds
  • External quips are mixed with your personal quips and randomized during rotation
  • Note, quips are trimmed if they exceed 100 letters in length, and for large files only the first part of the file is retrieved.
  • Note, external quips require WiFi in order to retrieve them.

Troubleshooting

Device not responding

If your BRICK QUIPS!™ seems frozen or unresponsive:

  • Try a power cycle - disconnect and reconnect power.

Can't connect to WiFi

WiFi connection issues can usually be resolved with these tips:

  • Ensure your WiFi network is 2.4GHz (5GHz is not supported)
  • Note that while connected to Bluetooth, WiFi is disabled.
  • Double-check the SSID and password - they are case-sensitive
  • Make sure WiFi is enabled in Settings > Data & Power
  • Note, some Wifi Routers use both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz - to force 2.5Ghz, move further from your router.

Can't connect via Bluetooth

Bluetooth connection issues can usually be resolved with these tips:

  • Note that while connected to WiFi, Bluetooth is disabled.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in Settings > Data & Power
  • Make sure your BRICK QUIPS!™ is near your device.
  • Power cycle the BRICK QUIPS!™.
  • Note on iOS use the BRICK QUIPS!™ App. Connecting from iOS does not work from Safari.
  • Connecting from your PC browser like Chrome does work.
  • Note, BRICK QUIPS!™ will turn off Bluetooth occasionally to perform housekeeping tasks via WiFi. Disable WiFi to turn off this behavior.

How do I factory reset my device?

Warning: This process will cause all of your settings to be lost.

Display issues

If the display isn't working correctly:

  • Blank screen: Check brightness setting - it may be set to 0%
  • Blank screen: The device might be asleep - shake it to wake it up.
  • "Ink" appearance on screen: This is likely due to heat, turn down the brightness.
  • Wrong colors: Power cycle the device to reinitialize the display
  • Text cut off: Your quip may be too long - keep quips short.

Clock issues

Your BRICK QUIPS!™ tries to adjust the time on its own:

  • When connected via WiFi it will update the current time automatically.
  • When connected via Bluetooth, it will receive the current time from your browser.
  • Use settings to configure timezone and format.
  • Add $time into your quips to insert the time.
